HYDROGEN VS DISULFIDE BONDS: WHAT’S THE BIG DIFF?
Hydrogen and disulfide bonds both contribute to the overall strength of hair. Aveda chose to build new, strong, hydrogen bonds within the cortex because there are more hydrogen bonds within the hair structure than any other type—approximately 10x more than disulfide bonds. Although an individual hydrogen bond has less strength than a disulfide bond and is more easily broken with daily grooming, heat-styling and chemical services, once disulfide bonds are broken, they cannot be easily restored. Other technologies work by creating a bridge between broken disulfide bonds, rather than building completely new hydrogen bonds, which is the Aveda way.
